After lunch we cross into the west bank again which is surprisingly easy and pick up a local guide for our visit

It is very commercialized and full of people. Even in the bus parking garage there are little kids and elderly holding out their wares and saying -one dollah

The church built over the Nativity site is under renovation

So inside you have to look through modern scaffolding to see the mosaics from the seventh century church

Which under the floor covers the mosaics from the third century church

Which covers the cave where Jesus is believed to be born. Just a few of our group were able to go in the back way, avoiding the Hour long line, and see the star on the floor of a cave marking the spot. The rest of us saw a similar cave with some other symbols in it

Nevertheless this sanctuary is where the Christmas broadcast usually comes from

This would be a more accurate image of what the hills around Bethlehem look like, minus all the trashiness of this side of the border

But still I am glad we set foot in Bethlehem and get a sense of where Naomi and Ruth came to live, where king David was born, and where God allowed his son to be born.
