Urumqi day 2, trip to Turpan

Wednesday we travelled to Turpan, about 3 hours through an extremely windy mountain pass that was part of the silk road. This area is about 90 percent Uegar, and today is their Muslim festival. April said we would see lambs being slaughtered everywhere, one per family, as they celebrate. The main stop was Gar City, 2000 plus years old trading center of the Silk Road. Hard to explain this place, entirely built into a raised mud river bed, but amazingly preserved because of the extreme dry climate, it borders the Gobi desert. We happened upon a cool day, only 103. But the temp can get so hot it will burn off your shoe leather, because you are basically walking in top of an earthen oven, really amazing place. Look it up!
