The girls are getting bigger by the day - about 3 weeks to go. We have been warned about the dangers of over-feeding pregnant mommas. You don't want those lambs putting on extra pounds before the duedate arrives.
But when the weather is nasty and you don't feel like standing outside hand-feeding your beloved farm animals you just toss a flake of hay in the feeding bin and sprinkle pellets on top and call it a day. Problem is - the greedy little mommas push their way in and gobble those pellets up before the timid alpacas get a chance to nibble their fair share.
So the other day I decided it was time to figure out a better plan. After all I don't want a delivery day disaster when I have all these blog readers waiting for the super cute results of our lambing season.
It was then I remembered the strange looking feeding bins laying around in cobweb corners of our barn. Turns out the former owner of this barn was quite inventive with all his gates, stantions and other barnyard contraptions. So upon closer inspection I realize the solution was just laying a few feet away from our feed buckets.
All I needed to do was to slip it over the higher stall rail and ta-da, problem solved. The mommas were none too happy once they realized I had sprinkled pellets just out of their reach, but perfectly accessible to the boys. But too bad for them, they really have little defense mechanism being docile, fat & flabby sheep.
This boy is giving me a verbal high-five right about now. His big grin is evidence that he's quite pleased with my figuring out the solution to female obesity in this barn. And what he really would like to know is could I please hang another one just for him so his greedy big brother doesn't push him out of the way too?
